Master of Science in Operations and Technology Management

Degree Outcomes

The Master of Science in Operations and Technology Management (M.S.O.T.M.) program creates leaders who can manage the complexities of modern enterprises by achieving competitive advantage through the use of operations and technology. The curriculum is rigorous and quantitative in operations and technology management and integrates theories and applications from business analytics, decision modeling, networking & telecommunications, process modeling, project and quality management, supply chain management, and systems analysis & design. 

Learning Goals and Objectives for Master of Science in Operations and Technology Management Graduates

Students who successfully complete all requirements for a MSOTM should be able to:

  1. Core of OTM Knowledge: Develop and master the knowledge and skills in the fields of Operations and Information Technology necessary to engineer competitive advantage within organizations and apply these skills in real business cases and problems.
    1. Demonstrate competency in the key fields of Operations and Information Technology when they apply the knowledge in the required courses and practical situations.
    2. Integrate the knowledge in the subfields of Operations and Information Technology to solve complex business problems and provide value-adding solutions through the improvements of operations and processes and/or the utilization of technology applications.
  2. Analytical and Critical Thinking Skills: Possess highly developed analytical and critical thinking skills needed to maximize organizational performance and oversee more efficient operations.
    1. Acquire the analytical and critical thinking skills needed to identify and frame business problems and evaluate the value provided by possible solutions.
    2. Select appropriate techniques and tools to analyze data and identify insights that aid problem solving and decision-making.
  3. Research Skills: Possess the research skills necessary for data collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting results to aid business problem-solving.
    1. Be proficient in data collection using various venues such as surveys, electronic databases, the internet, library, and other sources.
    2. Be adept at analyzing data to offer insights for a variety of business problems.
    3. Be able to prepare and present research reports, appropriately presenting facts, analysis, and conclusions.
  4. Value System: Evaluate the ethical and societal implications of managerial decisions.
    1. Identify ethical dilemmas, analyze them from multiple ethical and stakeholder perspectives, and recommend appropriate solutions to these dilemmas.

Admission Requirements

  1. Statement of Goals
  2. Current resume
  3. Two recommendation forms and letters
  4. Official Transcripts (from all previously attended academic institutions)
  5. A bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university recognized by the University of Portland
  6. International Applicants: All foreign transcripts will be evaluated by International Student Services prior to an admission decision
  7. Official GMAT (minimum score of 55th percentile in quantitative and 50th percentile in verbal) or GRE (minimum score equivalent to GMAT score)
  8. International Applicants: an official score from either the TOEFL (minimum score of 88) or IELTS (minimum score of 7.0) exam is required
  9. Undergraduate G.P.A of 3.2 (on a scale of 4.0)
  10. Undergraduate degree in business or a quantitative-based field of study
  11. International Applicants: Proof of financial support will be required to attend the University of Portland, but not required for application review

The GMAT/GRE requirement can be waived if an applicant has significant and relevant work experience; has successfully completed 9 hours of coursework at an AACSB accredited graduate business program with a cumulative G.P.A of 3.0 or higher; has a business-related graduate degree from an AACSB accredited program; has taken six hours of graduate business courses at the University of Portland as a non-degree seeking student and earned a 3.0 cumulative G.P.A. or higher; or for those pursuing the 4+1 program, the GMAT/GRE can be waived if the student earned a 3.2 cumulative G.P.A. in a quantitative major. It is strongly recommended that applicants have two to three years of professional experience after their bachelor’s degree to fully benefit from the program.

4+1 Program & Admission Requirements

  1. Open to University of Portland juniors or seniors who complete the above application requirements.
  2. Please note, a conditional admission of acceptance is given until a degree awarding transcript with G.P.A. verification is submitted to the Graduate School.

MSOTM Degree Requirements

For M.S.O.T.M. candidates who do not have an academic or professional OTM background, BUS 505 Introduction to OTM, will be required. M.S.O.T.M. students will complete 30 credit hours of specialized coursework in operations and technology management including four common courses (12 credit hours); and six concentration courses (18 credit hours) either in operations management or information technology or a combination of these two fields.
