Athletics Department Mission

The Congregation of the Holy Cross is committed to the highest standards of excellence in developing the whole person – the mind, heart and hands. The Department of Athletics at the University of Portland is devoted to these ideals in developing men and women of character, intelligence, and leadership through achievement in athletics and recreation, academic excellence, and formative service to the campus and community.

In order to fulfill the mission of the Athletic Department and the University, the Athletic Department is focused on four key areas:

  1. Athletic Achievement - Pilot varsity sports programs will consistently experience athletic success in the WCC and earn post-season opportunities led by coaches and staff devoted to teaching, learning, and personal development.
  2. Academic Excellence - Student-athletes will be actively engaged in a meaningful educational experience on campus including classroom, experiential, and global learning opportunities that culminate in an undergraduate or graduate degree that prepares students for lifelong success.
  3. Community Impact - Varsity athletics and recreation will establish a positive and lasting impact on the campus and community, provide formation and character development opportunities to all students, and create lifelong connections to the University through hosting games and events and campus and community outreach.
  4. Financial Responsibility - The Department of Athletics will create a sustainable financial model for intercollegiate athletics and recreation that balances University support with aggressive and appropriate fundraising and revenue opportunities.
