Campus Safety

Sara Westbrook, B.A. director

The Department of Campus Safety provides effective safety and security service to the community 24-hours a day, 365 days-a-year. Campus Safety officers patrol the 108-acre campus by foot, bicycle, and vehicle and work closely with the Portland Police Bureau and Portland Fire & Rescue.

The Department of Campus Safety’s mission is to enhance the living, learning, and working experience of the community by protecting life, maintaining order, and safeguarding property. It works to identify and resolve safety and security concerns in a professional, equitable, and courteous manner. Campus Safety seeks to take advantage of enforcement interactions and use them as teachable moments to nurture the personal growth of students. The Department encourages members of the community to share in the responsibility of reducing the opportunity for criminal activity.

Parking permits are issued by Campus Safety. Parking space is limited on campus as there are more parking permits issued than parking spaces; a parking permit does not guarantee a parking space. The University restricts parking in certain neighborhood areas by all members of the University community. Parking permits are mandatory during fall and spring semesters, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. With a permit, students can park in “general” parking areas. Students are never allowed to park in the lot around Waldschmidt Hall. First-year resident students may not bring a car to campus nor may they park on city streets in the neighborhood surrounding campus. If this policy poses a significant hardship, an exception may be granted by Campus Safety. Additional information about parking and commute options, as well as other services of the Department of Campus Safety can be found on the Campus Safety website, up.edu/campussafety.

Campus Safety is located in Haggerty Hall Suite 100, on Warren St., near the Chiles Center. The non-emergency (business) phone number for public safety is (503) 943-7161; for emergencies call (503) 943-4444.
