Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting
The University offers both four-year B.B.A. and five-year B.B.A./M.B.A. degrees for students considering a career in accounting. The accounting major prepares students for a variety of career opportunities, including public accounting, corporate accounting, tax planning, financial analysis, and consulting. The major provides students with insight into the preparation, use, and audit of financial statements; a knowledge of the tax code and strategic tax planning; understanding of accounting as an information system; and a fluency in accounting that enables students to work across business sectors to identify key issues for an organization.
The four-year B.B.A. degree offers students the opportunity to specialize in business reporting and analysis or to tailor their studies to their individual accounting interests. The specialization is recommended for students who wish to pursue the certified public accountant (CPA) certification. These students will need additional credit hours to fulfill the 150 semester credit hour requirement for individuals taking the CPA exam. Students are encouraged to meet the additional hour requirement at the University of Portland by:
- Completing the University's five-year B.B.A./M.B.A. degree, or
- Completing a graduate program in the Pamplin School of Business (see Graduate School).
Since requirements for CPA exams are governed by individual states, students should consider the appropriate option that meets the requirements of the state where they plan to become licensed.
