University of Portland Bulletin 2024-2025

Payment Schedule

Payment in full for tuition, housing, and meal plans (where applicable), and any assessed fees are due on or before August 8, 2024 for the fall 2024 semester and January 6, 2025 for the spring 2025 semester.

Tuition is due at the time of registration for all registration activity that occurs after the published due date, including registration by academic exception. Student accounts are subject to late fees if there is a balance at any time after the due date.

The Office of Student Accounts creates an account statement the first week of July for fall semester, in the later part of November for spring semester, and the first week of April for summer semester. The account statement reflects all current charges based on a student’s registration at the time of invoicing for the new semester. Accounts statements are generated at the beginning of every month during the academic year and are communicated electronically to students.

Students must make financial arrangements for any unpaid portion of their bill with the Office of Student Accounts prior to the due date in order to be cleared for class. Payment for any special charges and adjustments incurred during the semester is due at the time of adjustment.

Students must make financial arrangements for any unpaid portion of their bill with the Office of Student Accounts prior to the due date in order to be cleared for class. Payment for any special charges and adjustments incurred during the semester is due at the time of adjustment.

While the University of Portland does accept institutional payments (loans, scholarships) in excess of billed amounts in order to cover living and other expenses; it does not accept direct payments from parents or other non-institutional sources in excess of the billed amount. Any such amounts should be paid directly to the student.

Students assume full financial responsibility for all costs incurred as a result of enrollment at the University of Portland, regardless of who pays the bill on their behalf. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of their account balance and financial aid information, and to maintain current valid address information at all times to ensure receipt of all University correspondence in a timely manner. Students are responsible for all educational debt charged to their student account. Students should take the initiative to understand their rights and responsibilities as well as the deadlines associated with enrollment.

A student’s account must be paid in full in order to register for upcoming classes. Accounts that are more than 90 days past due may be referred to an outside agency for collection. The student agrees to pay all of the University of Portland's collection fees, collection costs at a rate of 33 percent of the balance due, attorney's fees, legal costs and charges for the collections of any unpaid balance of their student account. Degrees will not be issued to any student whose account has not been paid in full. If a past due account is paid by personal check, the degree and transcript will be released two weeks after the receipt of payment.

Expenses incurred because of damage to University property will be billed to the student who caused the damage.

The University is not responsible for any loss of, or damage to, the personal property of a student.

Health Insurance

Participation in the health insurance program is required of all full-time undergraduate students. Students who are already covered by a comparable health insurance program may have this requirement waived by submitting the online health insurance waiver. The online health insurance waiver will be reviewed by Pacific Source to confirm a student's coverage will meet or exceed the University of Portland sponsored health insurance. If a student's health insurance is found inadequate or not meeting our requirements, the waiver will not be permitted. Students will need to obtain adequate insurance by the first day of the fall or spring semester or participate in the University of Portland sponsored health insurance program. Students can find information about the health insurance waiver and what is required to waive University sponsored health insurance on the Student Accounts website. When deciding whether to waive, families may want to compare coverage and premiums. A waiver is required for each semester and must be received by the waiver deadline posted on the Student Account website. No refunds will be granted for late waiver submission. Any health insurance waivers received after the deadline will not be accepted for the current semester.

Student Activities Fee

The student activities fee is used by the Associated Students of the University of Portland (ASUP) to fund student programs and activities.

Campus Access Fee

The campus access fee supports the provision of technology, recreation, and health and wellness services, as well as access to Division I athletic events and The Log (yearbook) to all undergraduate students, whether they live on or off campus. This charge, previously bundled with housing rates, has been decoupled from housing so as to be shared more equitably among all undergraduate students who have access to these services. For those students in a study abroad program the fee is not charged. This is a common fee among our peer institutions who may, as we do, charge a single, bundled fee, or who may charge several smaller fees.

New Student Fee

All new undergraduate students, including transfer students, are assessed a one-time new student fee of $200 per student, which will be applied to the student’s account. This mandatory, non-refundable, and non-transferable fee helps cover many of the costs associated with the activities and materials provided to new students and their families during Orientation.

Tuition and Fees Refund Policies

Students are admitted to the University of Portland with the understanding they will remain enrolled until the end of the semester. Students enrolled in off campus programs should refer to the program handbook.

When students register for classes, they incur charges and are responsible for payment of these charges whether or not they attend. The University of Portland, a non-profit institution of higher learning, in establishing any student account, extends credit to students solely for the purpose of financing their education. Any balance due is hereby acknowledged as a student loan and will be considered non-dischargeable under Chapter 13 and 7 of the federal and state laws governing bankruptcy. To have the charge removed, students must process a drop or withdrawal through the registrar’s office within the refund period. If a student is dismissed or suspended, no part of the tuition and fees, including room and meal plans, for the remainder of the semester will be refunded. If a student finds it necessary to withdraw completely or from specific courses, the following policies apply:

Fall and Spring Semesters Tuition and Fees

In all cases of complete withdrawal counting from the first day courses begin each semester, the following refund schedule applies:

During the first week — 100% of tuition and fees

During the second week — 75% of tuition

During the third week — 50% of tuition

During the fourth week — 25% of tuition

After the fourth week — No refund

Different refund rules apply if you are going from full-time to part-time.

Tuition refunds are effective from the date a completed application to withdraw or drop courses is received in the Office of the Registrar, not from the last day of attendance. If you must withdraw after the refund period due to unusual circumstances, you may contact the Office of Student Accounts to apply for an exception to the refund policy.

Please see the current Summer Bulletin for summer session refund policies and schedules.

Confirmation of Enrollment

Students must verify their attendance by submitting a Confirmation of Enrollment each semester. Beginning approximately two weeks before each semester, students can confirm their enrollment by logging onto PilotsUP.

Hold Policy

Payment in full for tuition, housing and food (where applicable), and any assessed fees is due on or before August 8, 2024 for fall semester, January 6, 2025 for spring semester, and May 1, 2025 for all summer sessions. When payment is not made by the due date, the following hold policies apply: A student whose account is past due may be placed on a hold that restricts access to registration, grades, and diplomas. The hold may remain on the student account until the balance is paid in full. Payments made by personal or electronic check may not release the hold until two weeks after the receipt date. If a hold is released and the payment is subsequently returned unpaid, the University reserves the right to immediately cancel registration. Students with account holds are encouraged to contact the Office of Student Accounts.

Paying by Check

There is a two week holding period on student account credit balance refund from an overpayment by a check or on-line payment of any kind.

Credit Balances

Credit balances under $20.00 will not be refunded unless requested, and will be written off if they are over one year old.

Direct Deposit

All students are expected to establish a direct deposit bank account to receive payments from the University for loan disbursements, student account refunds, paychecks, and student club reimbursements. This promotes sustainability on campus; eliminates the possibility of lost checks; and enables faster, more secure deposits while reducing the possibility of theft and fraud. Any domestic bank is acceptable and students can establish their direct deposit bank account through Self-Serve Banner under Personal Information.

There are situations when arranging for direct deposit is not possible. In these cases, the student should follow the Direct Deposit opt-out form process outlined on the web page for the Office of the Controller at up.edu/controller under “Direct Deposit." Instructions and help for creating and managing direct deposit bank account can also be found there.

Summer Session

See the current Summer Session Bulletin for refund policy and enrollment status definitions for tuition and financial aid purposes.

Housing Refund

All students residing on campus are required to complete a residence hall and food service contract. This legal contract describes both University and student obligations and is for the entire academic year. Release from this contract will be granted only in the event of December graduation.

Food Service

Meal plan charges may be prorated if a student withdraws from the University or is released from the residence hall and food service contract due to a medical condition approved by the University Health Center.
